How do I protect myself against or prevent ID theft?

Protecting yourself against ID theft is a necessity in this computer age.

Do not:

  • Conduct online banking over wireless networks
  • Give account numbers to anybody over the phone
  • Give out your social security number unless absolutely required for services
  • Have your social security number or driver's license on your checks

Do:

  • Get your annual free credit report every year and confirm that the accounts they show are the accounts you have
  • Drop outgoing mail in a secure mailbox provided around town by the post office
  • Reconcile your bank and credit card statements every month to look for signs of id theft
  • Shred all credit card offers that you are not actually applying for
