A proposal to change the striping configuration on part of East Washington Street is the topic of an East Peoria City Council working session at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 16. Input is welcome from business owners and residents on whether to follow this plan or keep the current lane configuration. Here is the project background and the proposal:
In 2017 the City commissioned a study to look at the East Washington Street corridor from Main Street to I-74, based upon concerns expressed from the business and property owners along this stretch. Those concerns included parking availability, traffic speed, and pedestrian safety, among others.
This section of East Washington is scheduled for resurfacing later this summer, with restriping to follow. The proposal from the study is to go from the existing 10-feet wide, 4-lane configuration to a 12-feet wide, 3-lane configuration (one through lane in each direction and a center turn lane).
The graphics show mid-block crossings and streetscaping, but those are not in the cue for this year’s project.
The goal of the working session is to present this concept as an option to consider, and allow public input so an informed decision can be made moving forward.
