Smoke Alarm Program

About the Program

The East Peoria Fire Department has a free smoke alarm and installation program for East Peoria homeowners in financial need.

Recipients must be East Peoria residents and the owner of the home. Landlords are not eligible for the program. Those who qualify should call 309-698-4700 and ask for the assistant fire chief on duty.

Note: The fire department offers only smoke detectors, not carbon monoxide detectors or combination smoke-carbon monoxide detectors.

Smoke Alarm Placement

Fire department personnel can also provide installation for residents that need help or advice on the proper placement of a smoke detector.

The smoke alarm should be placed on the ceiling of every level of the home and outside bedrooms. If bedroom doors are kept closed, a smoke alarm should be placed on the ceiling of each bedroom.

Other Tips

Smoke alarms should be checked monthly by pressing the test button.

Other tips from the Federal Emergency Management Agency include:

  • Never take smoke alarm batteries out to put into other items like games or remote controls.
  • Teach children what the smoke alarm sounds like and what to do if the alarm sounds.
  • If there is a fire, leave the home immediately by crawling low, and do not go back inside.
  • Most alarms need a new battery at least once a year.
  • If a smoke alarm is over 10 years old, replace it with a new alarm and battery.
  • Renters should talk to their landlords about placing a working smoke detector in the home.
