In a procession of more than 100 vehicles, Marine Lance Cpl. Robert J. "R.J." Newton's body returned home Sept. 1, escorted by members of the East Peoria Police Department, Creve Coeur Police and Fire departments, and traveling under a large American flag draped on the I-474/Route 29 overpass by the East Peoria and Creve Coeur fire departments. Newton, 21, a Creve Coeur resident and 2007 graduate of East Peoria Community High School, was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan Aug. 23.

East Peoria city offices will be closed Monday, Sept. 6, in observance of Labor Day. There will be no residential garbage or curbside recycling pickup on Sept. 6. Collection will occur one day behind that week, starting Tuesday, Sept. 7 and ending Saturday, Sept. 11.

Tethered hot air balloon rides, races, games and exotic animals are just part of the activities occuring during Kidz Fun Day, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 25 in RiverFront Park (behind Wal-Mart SuperCenter).
